LETTER FROM PARADISE, PART 2, and Hawaiian Coconut Dessert

coconut tapioca pudding - hawaii Allerton Gardens

We got a sample of the kind of Eden that once existed on Kauai when we visited the Allerton Gardens, a breathtaking tropical jungle created by Robert Allerton, a wanna-be artist from Chicago and heir to a family fortune, who purchased the land in 1938.

LOW CARB DIRECT, A NEW, INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE!

I am pleased to announce the birth of a great new resource to help you succeed with your healthful, low-carb lifestyle. Low Carb Direct is the brainchild of Esther Moller, who is part of the low-carb community in South Africa. They call themselves Banters after an English carpenter and undertaker named William Banting, who published a book at his own expense in 1869 because he wanted to spare others from suffering from obesity as he had. Banting’s book, Letter on Corpulence, describes a diet that is very similar to those later promoted…

SIGH, YET ANOTHER MEAT-CAUSES-CANCER SCARE

default image

The anti-meat activists are having a heyday with the new study from the World Health Organization that states unequivocally that, hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats cause cancer. I’m sure you have seen it everywhere, even though the study has not even been officially released! Here is a link to the story in yesterday’s Washington Post if you need a refresher: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonkblog/wp/2015/10/26/hot-dogs-bacon-and-other-processed-meats-cause-cancer-world-health-organization-declares/ Below is my response. I’ve posted on every news story I could find that gave me a comment box! Also check out Zoe Harcombe’s…

ALLERGIES: THE SURPRISING ROOT OF THE PROBLEM

I’m sharing this story in case there are others of you who are suffering from allergies and looking for answers. No one can deny that allergies and auto-immune diseases are much more common today than they have ever been. Those of us who suddenly develop such conditions are often told, “it’s all in your head.” In my case, that turned out to be true, but I think I’m finally getting to the “root” of the problem.   Since mid-May of 2013, I have had a…

THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN

THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN KINDLE VERSION One look at the whimsical cover illustration makes it clear that this is going to be a fun read, not a dry discourse on biochemistry. Basically, The World Turned Upside Down, is the story of how we obtain energy from our environment, told by a talented teacher who explains it so even those of us who don’t know much chemistry, “can see the beauty in the life machine.” Sadly, it is also an expose of the irresponsible behavior…

FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES: A BETTER ALTERNATIVE TO STATINS?

default image

This story was in the headlines today. Merck finally got the results they were looking for on their drug Vytorin. Note that the drug did not lower plaque build-up and that all the subjects in the test were eating a low-fat / low-cholesterol diet. Vytorin (a combination of ezetimibe and a statin) showed a slight improvement over a statin alone, but it was not tested against a dietary change. Moral: give people (who already have coronary disease) a diet that causes inflammation and a drug…

Petition to the USDA and the DHHS: CREATE DIETARY GUIDELINES THAT WORK!

default image

Adele Hite, of the Healthy Nation Coalition, is petitioning the agencies responsible for setting the Dietary Guidelines for Americans to give us guidelines that actually serve the American people. The advice we’ve been given for the last 30 plus years has been a disastrous failure. Now is the time to speak up or we will likely be saddled with more of the same for the next five years. We must reach 1,000 signatures by December 31, 2014. Please sign and forward this to all your…

COULD THIS DIET SAVE THE WORLD?

KETO CLARITY The partnership between Jimmy Moore and Dr. Eric Westman reminds me a little of the relationship between Charles Darwin and Thomas Henry Huxley, who was known as “Darwin’s Bulldog.” Darwin provided the science; Huxley defended and popularized it. Jimmy is more like a big, lovable, puppy dog than a bulldog, but his communication skills and status as a social-media celebrity make him the perfect spokesman and n=1 test subject for the low-carb guru who inherited Dr. Atkins’s mantle after his untimely, accidental death.…

MEA CULPA FROM TIME MAGAZINE?

1984 2014 The March 26, 1984 cover of Time Magazine showed a frowny face made out of bacon and eggs. The headline of the feature article said, “Cholesterol, and Now the Bad News.” Inside, an article titled, “Hold the Eggs and Butter,” started with this line: “Cholesterol is proved deadly, and our diet may never be the same.” Amazingly, that original article from the 1984 issue (you can read it here) actually stated that the study on which this conclusion was based was not a diet study…
