BARIATRIC SURGERY: LOW CARB THE HARD WAY

default image

Another article about the miraculous effects of bariatric surgery appeared in the news this morning. The procedure has already been proclaimed the “cure” for diabetes and now Canadian researchers have reported that it reduces colon and breast cancer rates by 80% over five years. (“Gastric bypass surgery may stave off cancer,” Thomas H. Maugh II and Denise Gellene, Los Angeles Times, June 19, 2008. You can read the story here: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/text/2008005564_obesity19.html.) The authors state that two studies from last August have shown a decrease in…

BEST LIFE? NOT EVEN CLOSE!

I watched part of an Oprah show a while back (it might have been a rerun) in which Oprah and her fitness guru, Bob Green, went to Mississippi to save the residents of “the fattest state in America.” Oprah, who has famously had her own troubles in that regard, was well aware of the irony of her attempt to give out advice on weight loss. She magnanimously absolved Mr. Green of any blame for her most recent relapse and took sole responsibility while vowing to…

The Nutrition and Metabolism Society

Here’s a great new site (well, new to me anyway). I intend to add it to the links list on my Website the next time my live-in, computer-techie husband updates it for me. The Nutrition and Metabolism Society at http://www.nmsociety.org/ provides one-stop-shopping for news, information, and science about everything low carb. Their 2008 seminar in Phoenix starts tomorrow, so I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about that. Here’s a preview: “This symposium will summarize and critically evaluate the evidence supporting the relationship between dietary saturated…

The Scientific Evidence in Favor of Low Carb for the Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes Continues to Build

default image

The American Diabetes Association has opened the floodgates by finally admitting that low-carbohydrate diets are “as effective for weight management as low-fat.” This dramatic turn-around was part of its 2008 clinical practice recommendations. The headline on Adam Campbell’s story about the ADA’s lukewarm endorsement was, “Apparently, Hell Just Froze Over.” Here’s the link for Adam’s article: http://thefitnessinsider.menshealth.com/2007/12/apparently-hell.html Now that people have officially been given permission to try a diet that naturally lowers blood glucose and insulin levels, there will be no going back. It will…

Minding Your Brain

default image

If you haven’t already found Dr. McCleary’s Website, http://www.drmccleary.com/, don’t waste another minute. The brilliant author of The Brain Trust Program has already posted eight not-to-be-missed articles about the care and feeding of your brain. His latest, explains the chicken or the egg conundrum of how we could have developed the kind of intelligence necessary to provide our brains with a nutrient dense diet before we actually had brains capable of the skill and cunning needed to procure such a diet. Living along the shoreline,…

Rating Consumers Report

default image

The June, 2007 issue of Consumers Report again disses low carb diets. They point out that the diets were not tested (Isn’t that the whole point of Consumers Report? To actually test things?), but rated by a panel of nutritionists as to how they compare to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans. As long as diet plans continue to be ranked based on the U.S. Guidelines, we will get bad advice and will likely continue to get fatter and sicker. Just look at the food…
