SUPPORTING TRUTH IN SCIENCE

Laurie Cagnassola, director of the Metabolism Society (AKA the Nutrition and Metabolism Society), publishes a fantastic newsletter. The November 3rd issue features articles by Dr. John Briffa, Laura Dolson (low-carb guide for about.com), and Dr. Uff Ravnskov. Laurie’s newsletters regularly include updates on the latest research, a column by Jimmy Moore, and a question and answer column by yours truly! An archive button will be added over the coming weekend so you can access the newsletters in addition to the wealth of resources on the…

SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE YOUR MIDDLE

I was probably one of the first people to pre-order the new book, The 6 Week Cure for the Middle Aged Middle, by Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades. When the publication date passed and others were already blogging and posting about it, and I still hadn’t received my copy, I gave up and ordered it again. Then I had to read it, collect the necessities, and wait for a time when my husband, whom I shall hereafter refer to as “D,” would be home…

LOOKING FOR CARB WARS?

default image

Due to an inventory mistake at the fulfillment center, Carb Wars is temporarily sold out. A second printing is underway and more books should be available soon. Amazon does not have any books in stock, but will continue to take orders. (My Amazon page now says, “usually ships in one to two months,” but it shouldn’t take nearly that long.) Regular bookstores may still be able to get copies from Ingram by special order. The Cookbook Marketplace, www.cookbookparketplace.com, also has a few left and they…

IN SEARCH OF THE PERFECT HUMAN DIET

I recently had the opportunity to see a confidential, 22-minute completion fundraising preview of C. J. Hunt’s documentary, In Search of the Perfect Human Diet, and I can tell you that this is going to make waves. He’s done a fantastic piece of investigative journalism that leaves no doubt about which diet is the best match for the human genome. This is the scientific evidence that the world, especially the media, needs to see in order to find solutions for the epidemic of obesity and…

FAT IMPROVES PERFORMANCE FOR PILOTS

default image

A military-funded study conducted by researchers at the University of North Dakota discovered that pilots who ate the most fatty foods, such as butter or gravy, had the quickest response times in mental tests and made fewer mistakes when flying in tricky conditions. Forty-five student pilots were tracked to test their performance on flight simulators while eating four different diets: high-fat, high-carbohydrate, high-protein, and a control diet. Psychology professor Tom Petros, who conducted and reviewed the tests, said, “We wound up analyzing the data every…

WHEN DOES 16 X 0.49 = ZERO?

In the past I put my trust in food labels to figure the nutrition counts for my recipes. Apparently, it was misplaced. I know that sometimes they are just wrong. For example, I have 2 different brands of powdered erythritol that list the weight as being the same as that for granular erythritol. However, when I weigh it, it weighs twice as much. I assume that the manufacturer, who is required to provide the information, took the numbers from some approved chart that only…
