HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

PUMPKINS (©) 2007, JUDY BARNES BAKER

We made a quick trip to Costco yesterday with Trick or Treat goodies on the shopping list. I am always conflicted about the ethics of giving away things that I wouldn’t eat myself, but just turning out the lights seems a bit Scrooge-ish and not likely to endear us to the neighborhood urchins. We don’t get many, since we live in a rural area, but I just can’t bear to disappoint them after they walk up the long, dark driveway to our door. Most parents…

Additional Cruise Information

Here’s some additional info about the cruise from our coordinator, Becky Gandy:“This cruise is INCLUSIVE — including taxes, port charges, and fuel surcharge. The ONLY thing not covered is alcohol, gambling, special excursions, and souvenirs. We will get a $75 per cabin rebate on the ship-bill. They charge a $50 tip at the END of the cruise, so this rebate covers that cost too!” This is quite a deal. The Vacations-to-go newsletter explained that the cruise lines don’t want to sail with empty cabins because…

(I think tips are also included for us, but I’ll have to double check that.) In view of the reduced price that is now being offered, our cruise coordinator, Becky Gandy (xregandyx@yahoo.com), has negotiated…

MYSTIC PIZZA

Variations of this ingenious pizza recipe have been circulating online in the low-carb community. I can’t pinpoint its creator, but I suspect it may be progeny from Jamie Van Eaton’s accidental recipe called Oopsies. The always amusing Jamie, who blogs as Cleochatra (http://cleochatra.blogspot.com/), was making a recipe called Revolution Rolls that appeared in one of the early Atkins books when she misread 3 tablespoons of cream cheese as 3 ounces. The rest is low-carb history, with countless variations and even competitions for the most creative…

“The Omnivore’s Hundred” was posted on the British blog Very Good Taste by Andrew Wheeler back in August. It is an interactive meme for bloggers. He lists 100 things that he thinks every good omnivore should have tried at least once in his/her life. Some of the items are ordinary, some are dangerous, some are exotic, and some are just plain bad. Check out his list below and see how you do. So far he has had 1,111 responses. I have eaten 64 of the…
