SMART EATS CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY

default image

Last February, I posted an invitation to the grand opening of a new store called Smart Eats on Main Street in Mill Creek, Washington. The store sells low-carb, diabetic, and gluten-free products. They recently celebrated their first anniversary and they report that their business is better than ever. Store owners, Dan Arnold and his wife, Amber Wester, have become effective advocates for healthful eating. Dan gives his wife credit as the low-carb expert who decides which products to stock and she clearly knows what she…

PEDIATRIC NUTRITION WITH DR. SU AND FRED HAHN

default image

Dr. Robert K. Su invited Fred Hahn, author of The Slow Burn Fitness Revolution and Strong Kids, Healthy Kids, and me for a three-way discussion as part of his podcast series about Pediatric Nutrition on the Carbohydrates Can Kill website. He originally planned to give us 30 minutes, but we were still going strong and having such a lively exchange that he let us keep going for a whole hour. The three of us even continued to talk long after we were off the air.…

A BRAVE EXPLORER: DR. ROBERT K. SU

“Christopher Columbus, as everyone knows, is honored by posterity because he was the last to discover America.” –James Joyce Today is Columbus Day, when we honor a courageous man who defied conventional wisdom to set out on a voyage of discovery. I’d like to introduce you to another brave explorer: Dr. Robert K. Su. This remarkable physician is one of many doctors who have independently discovered that the conventional wisdom about a healthful diet is sadly flawed and often has deadly consequences. And like Dr.…

THE PERFECT HUMAN DIET

default image

The USDA is now advocating a plant-based, very low-fat diet. What can we do beyond writing letters? Here’s a chance for you to help get the truth out. I blogged about a fantastic documentary called “In Search of the Perfect Human Diet” in a previous post after I had a chance to preview an excerpt: http://carbwars.blogspot.com/2009/10/in-search-of-perfect-human-diet.html. Some of the world’s leading scientists in human evolutionary nutrition were involved in this international endeavor, including: • Dr. Loren Cordain (author of The Paleo Diet, Colorado State University)…

CARB WARS FEATURED ON LIFESCRIPT

default image

A huge thank you to Life Script, the premier website for women’s health, for the feature article on Carb Wars, which included 7 recipes with pictures and a story written by Nicole McEwen. Life Script is the 4th largest independent health site and the 10th largest women’s online community. . Judging by the comments, the article evoked the usual controversy among the pro- and anti-low carb factions, even though the writer softened my message somewhat by suggesting that lack of exercise might be responsible for…

EATING ROSES

default image

One of the most beautiful and memorable desserts I ever had was a tiny scoop of rose flavored ice cream nestled in the heart of a perfect, pale pink rose. It was presented simply, with no cookie or cake to steal the limelight. There were hundreds of guests at the event, and yet every petal was perfect and the ice cream was seemingly suspended in that fleeting, meltingly-spoonable-but-still-firm stage. To pull off such an ambitious feat was a staggering achievment for the restaurant staff. I…

LOW CARB CRUISE TO MEXICO

Here I am in beautiful Cozumel, Mexico! (I picked the right shirt to wear, didn’t I?) Low-carb cookbook author, Dana Carpender and “that nice boy she married,” enjoying dinner in the Windstar restaurant on board the Carnival Ecstasy. Shopping in Cozumel with Jackie and Conrad Eberstein. Dr. Carlson sings “Fire and Rain.” How can a guy from New York sound exactly like James Taylor? Dr. Westman singing his original composition, ” I wish they all could be carbohydrate free.” Jimmy Moore posted the lyrics at:…

A NEW BOOK!

default image

Sometimes I’m sure I’ve wandered into a parallel universe. I am an accidental writer—I wrote my first book because I thought it needed to be written, and I never really expected to write another one. But to quote Eddie Izzard’s line from The Riches, “Life’s a river. You go where it takes you.” I am thrilled to report that I am writing a second book. A chance encounter on an elevator led to a book contract with a major organization. The book has been in…
